Object Name Letter
Title Letter, Dr. Paul A. Boe to Mr. Allen Bostelmann, January 29, 1974
Date January 29, 1974
Scope & Content Reverend Paul A. Boe was a Lutheran pastor, executive director for the Division of Social Services in Minneapolis under the American Lutheran Church (ALC), and champion of Native American concerns during his lifetime. He was invited to come to Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota during the AIM occupation in 1973 as an impartial observer and friend. During the legal battles that followed the occupation, Boe refused to testify about what he saw at Wounded Knee, claiming it would violate pastoral confidence. In December of 1973, he was found in contempt of court and sentenced to 14 months in prison, a conviction which was reversed before he served any time.

Boe wrote this letter to Allen Bostelmann of the Twin City Chapter of the Lutheran Human Relations Association on January 29, 1974, in response to Bostelmann's letter of January 25 expressing support for his actions.
